This campaign is justified because according to data from the National Register of Car Accident Victims, there were 156 road accidents involving maintenance and protection personnel on the roads in 2021. As a result, 19 included personnel working or walking on or near the road on foot.
In these 19 accidents, seven workers were injured and two workers died when they were run over by a vehicle whose driver was driving recklessly because he was driving too fast or was distracted. The other 137 traffic accidents involved operators inside their vehicles. So far this year, two maintenance workers have already died.
DGT has conducted the specified special surveillance campaign to more accurately control how to drive on marked sections of works. Especially during the week of 24-30 October, 140,711 vehicles were checked and 4,679 of them were fined for different reasons.
The main penalty was speeding, this violation was penalized by 73% of drivers. Additionally, of the 4,727 sanctions filed, 242 were concerned with not respecting signs, whether they were traffic watchmen, construction workers, vertical signs, road signs, traffic lights, cones or lighted beacons, or any other type of signage. .
During the campaign, 153 drivers who used mobile phones were fined and 140 drivers who did not wear seat belts were fined. 53 people who were punished for drunk driving and 11 people due to the presence of drugs in the body were added to these.
The DGT describes the situation as worrying, with 34 sanctions for reckless driving, 30 sanctions for failing to observe safety distance, 24 for illegal overtaking, and 22 for unauthorized lane changing.
